Poet and author Maya Angelou has died at her home in North Carolina at the age of 86-years-old.
Angelou's agent confirmed to ABC News that the novelist passed away this week. She was born on April 4, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri.
Angelou spoke at least six languages and worked as a newspaper editor in Egypt and Ghana, according to a report from CNN. Often times she was referred to as Dr. Angelou, even though she never went to college.
She has more than 30 honorary degrees and taught American studies for years at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
