American Airlines Unions Back Merger With U.S. Airways
U.S. Airways wants to takeover American Airlines -- and they've got the backing of the bankrupt airline's unions.
U.S. Airways worked out deals with three labor unions at American, who have agreed to support a possible merger between the two airlines.
That includes TWU 514 in Tulsa. For many of the workers, it could come down to jobs.
U.S. Airways said it could save more than 6,000 of the 13,000 positions that could be cut.
American and its parent company, AMR, are working under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. U.S. Airways has said no merger deal has been made, but the two are obviously in talks.
"Premature discussions of mergers with competing companies only serve as a hindrance to the significant progress being made by the negotiating teams," said Mike Neal, president and CEO of the Tulsa Metro Chamber, in a press release on Saturday.
Tulsa's Channel 8's will continue to follow this developing story.
