Army Corps Opens All Beaches at Lake Tenkiller

Three beaches that closed at Lake Tenkiller because of high E. Coli levels are now back open this week.

Officials with the Army Corps of Engineers in Tulsa announced Thursday that the remaining area, Chicken Creek, would reopen at noon. Snake Creek and Cookson Bend were opened back up for all activities last week.

Previous reports from KTUL state that all three beaches were closed on June 13 after tests showed unsafe levels of E. Coli. Park rangers collected water samples at the time and repeated testing showed the areas failed to meet water quality standards.

Crews closed the areas for swimming, but visitors were still allowed on the campgrounds and boat ramps.

Another beach at Grand Lake in Delaware County has been closed since June 3 with the same issues. Officials believe that geese and other bird droppings are to blame for the elevated E. Coli levels.
