Bernice Swimming Area Remains Closed, E. Coli Levels Remain Elevated

A swimming area at Grand Lake remains closed this week after continued testing shows elevated E. Coli levels in the water.

Officials with the Grand River Dam Authority stated that the swimming area at the Bernice State Park will remain closed this week. Area visitors have not been able to swim in at the beach since June.

"When this swim area was initially closed in early June, the primary goal was to determine the source," GRDA spokesperson Justin Alberty said. "These results show this to be a naturally occurring event and not anything man-made."

Previous reports from KTUL state that droppings from geese and other birds are source of the increased E. Coli. Heavy rains in the area likely led to geese waste being washed into the water, leading to the elevated bacteria levels.

Alberty told KTUL that crews continue to test the water daily, but that results have not changed since the initial closure. Visitors will not be able to swim at the Bernice State Park, but the campgrounds and other nearby swimming areas remain open for regular activities.
