Big Inning Propels ORU Baseball To Victory

A seven-run eighth inning helped the Oral Roberts University baseball team to a big victory on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Eagles rolled past Nicholls State at home, 8-1, winning the three-game series 2-1.

Tim Zufall (5-1) allowed just five hits and a run in eight innings of work to earn the victory. Alec Smith entered in the ninth for the final three outs of the game.

The Golden Eagles (15-26, 10-8) sit in a four-way tie for fourth place with Central Arkansas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Stephen F. Austin.

Jose Trevino continued his hot hitting trend with a double and a single, giving him seven hits in the series. Tyler Boss had the same output at the plate, driving in the go-ahead runs on his double in the eighth inning that scored Matt Brandy and Logan Domenico.

Brandy, who started the eighth with a walk, added a two-run double later in his second at bat in the inning that plated Kevin Cho and Brandon Healy. ORU had just three hits in the inning, taking advantage of four walk and two Colonel errors.

ORU's seven-run inning was the most runs it has scored in an inning this season.

In the top of the fourth, Trevino picked up his double with one out and was followed by a Boss single. Trevino then crossed the plate for the first time on the afternoon as Nate Goro reached on a fielder's choice.

Nicholls tied the game in the top of the eighth as Leo Vargas singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Jackson. Jackson was the starting pitcher, striking out four Golden Eagles and allowing just a run in six innings. He was relieved by Taylor Byrd who took the loss.

ORU travels to Beaumont, Texas, on Friday as they face the hottest team in the Southland, Lamar. The Cardinals have won seven straight contests through Sunday and are tied with Sam Houston State for first place.
