Bill Would Give Native Americans Cabinet-Level Post

A bill is moving through the Oklahoma House of Representatives that would give Native Americans a cabinet-level post in the Governor's Office.

House bill 1305 is intended to foster relations and interactions between the State of Oklahoma and Indian tribes if passed.

"This measure would firm up the government-to-government relationship" among Oklahoma's 39 federally recognized Native American tribes and the State of Oklahoma, said representative Chuck Hoskin.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that there are around 325,000 Native Americans in Oklahoma.
