Church Back to School Event Helps More Families Than Ever

A local church is reaching out to families, with back to school supplies. It is their mission to give families what they need.

But Owasso's New Heights Church says the need was greater than they expected. They had rooms full of one thousand backpacks, and just before noon only a fraction was left. Now the church itself is walking in faith to meet the incredible needs of children.

The line at New Heights Church started around 6-a.m. Families were lined up, with folding chairs and water bottles prepared to wait for the doors of the church to open.

In the annual back to school event volunteers gave away backpacks, shoes and clothing for students.

The Oklahoma Caring Van was there to offer immunizations and the Oklahoma Dental Foundation came to help perfect little smiles.

Normally the long line would have dwindled by 10 a..m. but a.m.oday, the line was longer, indicating more families in need.

"A lot of people do things oversees and we feel like the need is just as good in our own community and that's what we want to do. We want to help out within our ccommunity" said Dena Cryder, who organizes the event.

At this point donations are still rolling in for the church. In turn, they've gone and bought more supplies. Organizers say that next year, they will need a larger facility.
