Communities Say Shop Local for Holidays

If you plan on getting a head start on holiday shopping this weekend, you might want to think twice about going out of town or shopping online. Many local communities are asking you to shop your hometown for the holidays. Some communities are even giving away cash to entice you.

In Sapulpa, the Jingle Bell Sweepstakes will kick off tomorrow. For every local purchase, shoppers are given tickets that will be entered into a $10,000 grand prize drawing on December 15th.

Shop owners like Margie Cochran at Le Jardin are gearing up for the day. She says when you shop local, you get personal service -- something you won't get in a big box store.

"It's easy for people to get on the turnpike and zip through to the city where there are numerous venues and shopping centers." said Cochran. "It goes back to do you want personal care or do you want big box?"

It's not just Sapulpa. Cities including Tulsa and Broken Arrow are also asking you to shop local. Sapulpa Main Street Executive Director Annette Bowles said that is because of the sales tax dollars.

"We need the sales tax dollars here," said Bowles. "It helps fund essential services like police, fire, and streets."
