Update: Muskogee Fire Near School Mostly Contained
Firefighters have mostly contained a grass fire that prompted a Muskogee school to let out early this afternoon.
Officials with the Muskogee Fire Department said the blaze was reported after noon near 54th Street and Okmulgee Avenue.
A school district spokeswoman said the smoke from the fire was approaching Benjamin Franklin Science Academy.
Students were dismissed about 45 minutes early. Bus riders were picked up at the school as a precaution and will be dropped at bus stops at their normal time. Parents were allowed to pick up their students from the school.
Officials said by 3:40 p.m. most of the students were off the campus. Firefighters have contained the fire and officials say none of the school property was damaged.
Administrators say it was a good drill on how to deal with Oklahoma's fire danger.
