A Rogers County judge has reduced the sentence of man serving 20 years in prison for killing a father and son while driving drunk. Twenty-one- year -old Keaton Hannah was in court on Monday morning to have his sentence reviewed.
Hannah will be released earlier than expected, but not today. Instead the judge decided to suspend 9 years of Hannah's sentence, which means he could be out on parole in six years.
The victims family members said the ruling is not fair."Keaton is going to be 29 when he is released, my husband was 21. My son was only 8 months 17 days old. He had his whole life ahead of him," said Ginger Watkins, who lost her husband and child back in 2011.
Watkins sat crying in a courtroom waiting to hear if a judge would release the man who took the life of her husband and her baby boy.
"It's not right. You are sending a message to other kids saying that just go out and party, you only get a few years a slap on the wrist and then that's it," Watkins said.
Watkins and her family have are still trying to cope with what happened on June 7, 2011.
On that night Hannah, who was intoxicated, got in a minor accident on Highway 66 and then left the scene. He flipped his truck around going in the wrong direction, until he slslammedead on into an SUV, killing 21- year -old Eric Watkins and his 8 month old baby Bryor.
"My baby boy and my husband were both innocent people and they got killed," Ginger said.
During Monday's review, Watkins asked the judge to keep hannah behinds bars, but defense attorney Jack Gordon asked for Hannah to be freed.
"I wanted him out so he could see if he could on a speaking tour and see if he could talk to these kids about what happened," Gordon said.
Gordon said Hannah was just a young kid who made a terrible mistake and who is remorseful for what he did.
"Yea he might be remorseful, but still had plenty of opportunities to stop what he was doing and he knew what he was doing," Ginger said.
Once Hannah is let out on parole he'll be required to speak at all rogers county high schools about the dangers of drinking and driving.
