East Tulsa Apartment Fire Displaces 16 Families

Sixteen families were displaced Thursday morning after an apartment fire broke out in east Tulsa.

Firefighters battled the flames at the Sugarberry Apartments on 61st Street between Garnett and Highway 169.

Investigators believe at this time that the fire started on a balcony in an upstairs apartment. But no cause has been given at this time.

KTUL learned that only the upstairs apartment was damaged by fire, but several others suffered smoke and water damage leaving them uninhabitable. Residents in nearby units scrambled out to safety once they realized what was happening.

"I wasn't really feeling any heat. Didn't even dawn on me it was a big fire," resident Tim Hewitt said. "Figured somebody had tried to burn something in their fireplace."

No injuries were reported during the incident. Fire officials will continue their investigation this morning.
