Facebook Target of "Sophisticated Attack"

Facebook Security announced the social media giant was targeted by a "sophisticated attack," Friday, Feb. 15.

Facebook Security stated in a post that the attack took place last month. According to the release, "...a handful of employees visited a mobile developer website that was compromised."

The compromised website allowed malware to be installed on to the laptops of the Facebook employees visiting the site.

The social media company stresses in the release that no evidence has been found showing that user data has been compromised.

The attack on Facebook follows a series of hacking aggression against other large organizations.

Twitter announced a security breach in user data in early February. Twitter was able to stop the advance, but not before attackers managed to access limited user information for approximately 250,000 users.

A Twitter representative stated the attack was "not the work of amateurs."

The attacks on both social media companies followed hacking outbreaks against the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.
