Fire in Luther May Have Been Arson

Crews on the scene at Luther fire

Arson may have been responsible for a fire in Luther that started on Friday.

Residents east of Luther Road and west of Pottowatomie Road were evacuated Friday afternoon.

The fire destroyed nearly 60 homes and other buildings before fire crews were able to contain the fire a little on Saturday.

An eyewitness called dispatchers Friday afternoon to report they had seen a white male driving a 2008 black Ford F-150, tossing out a newspaper that had been set on fire.

Though that person of interest has not been located, authorities have arrested a looting suspect.

The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office was notified on Saturday about a man who was seen running out of a house in near North Harrah Road and East Covell Road in Luther.

The witness followed the suspect in her vehicle until a deputy arrived.

The deputy stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver.

The driver admitted to taking a flat screen TV from the evacuated home.

The deputy found the television set and drug paraphernalia inside the man's vehicle.

The driver, 30-year-old Jesse Johnson, was taken into custody.

Johnson was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on complaints of second-degree burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Anyone with information on the suspect throwing a burning newspaper out of a black Ford F-150 is encouraged to call the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office at 405-869-2501.

There is no evidence connecting Johnson with the suspected arson that may have started the Luther fire.
