First Weekend of Rifle Season Wraps Up

The first weekend of this year's rifle season is wrapping up. A Game Warden told Channel 8 they are busy riding around, keeping tabs on hunters, and responding to trespass calls.

A 13-year-old accidentally shot and killed his stepfather Saturday while hunting. However, Game Warden Carlos Gomez said this is extremely rare. He likened hunting during rifle season to Thanksgiving, saying families use it as an excuse to come together.

He said hunting education in Oklahoma has greatly improved over the past few decades. He encourages all family members, old and young, to take safety courses together to stress the importance of safe hunting practices.

Gomez said rifle season is important to control large deer populations. Hunting deer protects motorists from deer-related car accidents.

Rifle season will continue through December 2nd.
