Former Athletic Director Say She's Sorry for Embezzlement
The former Tulsa Public Schools athletic director says she's sorry for taking money that belonged to the district as she pled guilty to embezzlement today in federal court.Stephanie Spring appeared before a judge Thursday during a pre-trial hearing. There she entered a "guilty" plea to charges that she took money for the rental of school facilities in Tulsa instead of putting it in the school's fund."I am so sorry for what I have done," Spring said in a statement. "I broke the law, I broke the people's trust and I broke the very core of my upbringing. I have no excuse for what I did. Though deeply remorseful, I am not in a position to ask for forgiveness yet and maybe I never will be. After I right my wrong and pay my debt to society, I will live the rest of my life working to put myself in a position to earn that forgiveness."In November of 2011, Spring was suspended from her athletic director position along with her assistant athletic directors Jon Wheeler and Trish Pruitt. Federal investigators stepped into the case last year as the embezzlement case continued.Following Springs guilty plea, TPS sent out a release:"We are pleased that Ms. Spring has chosen to plead guilty in federal court today. These are dollars that should have gone into the District's general fund, and were instead diverted and used by Ms. Spring to enrich herself. Her actions clearly caused harm to TPS students and damaged the reputation of our district."In the release, officials added that they were disappointed at the way Spring's treated her responsibility as athletic director. They also approved of her acknowledgement of violating the "public trust.""Our thanks to the U.S. Attorney's office for their diligence and hard work. We are appreciative of the many hours that have gone into the investigation of this case, as well as the fine work of the TPS Police Department."MORE ON KTUL.com: Tulsa Schools Move Forward After Scandal Hits Athletic Department
