Golden Eagles Fail To Sweep South Dakota State

Oral Roberts fell in an early 3-0 hole and could not recover, dropping the final game against South Dakota State, 3-1 Sunday, at Erv Huether Field. ORU still won the series, three games to one.

The Golden Eagles (24-20, 11-4 Summit) had just three hits in the loss, with one extra-base hit, coming in the form of a triple from Jose Trevino, who later scored the only ORU run of the game.

Drew Bowen (3-2) pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on six hits, but was hit with the loss.{}

Cam Schiller and Brandon King also recorded hits, and Jared Schlehuber earned the RBI on a groundout, scoring Trevino in the ninth.

Layne Somsen earned the victory on the mound for SDSU (14-27-1, 3-9 Summit), as the Jackrabbits snapped a nine-game conference losing streak.

After a leadoff single by Beau Hanowski, a throwing error by ORU on a sacrifice bunt put him on third base. Zach Rhodes got the ball to deep enough center field to score Hanowski and give the Jackrabbits an early 1-0 lead.

The home team went right back to work in the second as Daniel Marra doubled to start the inning, kick-starting a three-hit, two-run inning to put SDSU up 3-0.

The ORU defense stiffened, but the Golden Eagles could not string together any hits, notching one in the fourth and another in the seventh. Down to the final two outs, Trevino tripled to center and was scored on a ground out by Schlehuber. A fly ball ended the game, and ORU's seven-game conference winning streak.

With no mid-week games due to finals, ORU will be back in action on Saturday, May 5, as they start a three-game series with Mississippi Valley State with a double-header starting at 2 p.m.
