Health Officials Report First West Nile Death in Oklahoma County

Oklahoma health officials have reported Thursday that a woman in Oklahoma County has died from West Nile virus.

Information from the Oklahoma State Department of Health stated that four cases of the disease have been confirmed, including the woman who died. All have taken place in Oklahoma County.

According to the OSDH website, the woman who died was between 70-79-years-old. The virus was found in the three other individuals were below 50-years-of-age.

In Oklahoma the disease typically runs from May to November. The first case of West Nile in 2013 was confirmed back in August.

Those over the age of 50 are at greater risk of developing serious illness involving the nervous system, according to a fact sheet from the OSDH.
