Low Lake Levels Force State of Emergency for Pawnee

A state of emergency was declared for residents in Pawnee after the town's water levels fell drastically low.

City leaders discussed the situation during a meeting Tuesday evening after main water supply, Pawnee Lake, has continued to shrink over the past few years. Pawnee is located west of Tulsa in Pawnee County.

According to a report from the Associated Press, officials approved $270,000 that would drill two new wells to help boost the water supply. But the new wells will not replace Pawnee Lake and their primary source of water.

Crews will begin installing the new wells in late June. A current map of the amount of rainfall across Oklahoma shows that more than 60 percent of Pawnee County is under "extreme drought."
