EDMOND, Okla. (AP) - Authorities are looking for a suspect in the sexual assault of an 18-year-old male at the University of Central Oklahoma, and officials say many sexual assaults of men go unreported because of societal pressures.
Research shows many rapes of women also never make it to police files. A notice to students at UCO says the attack on the male victim took place Sept. 23.
Justice Department statistics show men represent a lesser share of the nation's sexual assault victims. The Oklahoman reports 11% of sexual assault victims between 1992 and 2000 were male.
Ken Elliott directs UCO's Violence Prevention Project. He says an unwillingness among men to report sex assaults stems from worries they'll lose respect and support of their family and friends.Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
