Mary Anne's Baked Hash Browns
Hash browns never tasted so good! These baked hash browns are great served at a brunch or as a side dish for an evening meal. Your family and guests will love this dish and you will love its simplicity!
1 small to medium onion, sliced thin, optional
9 frozen hash brown patties, I prefer Ore-Ida
1 teaspoon salt
Dash freshly cracked pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 cup heavy whipping cream, more if you like a creamier hash brown
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese or Asiago cheese
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. If using, saute' onion in a skillet with bacon seasoning (grease) or butter until caramelized. Remove from pan and place in a greased 9x13-inchbaking dish. (You can use some of the bacon seasoning or spray with a non-vegetable spray(Pam).
- Add hash brown patties on top of caramelized onions. If you are leaving out the sauteed onion, place hash brown patties in greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Pour cream over patties. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees F. for 50minutes. Before sprinkling with cheese, stir patties, cream, and, onion, if using. Bake 5 to 10minutes longer or until potatoes are tender and cheese is melted. Makes 6-8 servings.
Note: I have used other brands of hash browns and this recipe turns out greasy. That is why I prefer Ore-Ida Hash Browns. I rarely recommend brands except when I find one that works exceptionally well. When I have used other brands, the dish has turned out greasy.
Note: You can saute' diced red, green, yellow or orange bell peppers, minced garlic, or even sliced mushrooms with the onion. It's great with or without these additions.
