A popular downtown bar is celebrating 10 years in business this week.
McNellie's owner Elliot Nelson shared how much downtown has changed since he first opened the pub. The area was mostly industrial and many buildings sat empty at the time.
"When we first opened here, next door was a welding shop, next door to that was a machine shop that fabricated big pipeline parts. Across the street was a book binder and a then cabinet maker, " he said. "To see it change over the years has been really good."
McNellie's has participated in the resurgence of the Blue Dome district as part of a sizable company of food and beverage businesses in the area known as the McNellie's group. Nelson told us McNellie's has had a lot of ups and downs but he said it has been a good ten years overall.
McNellie's has become a destination for beer lovers, with a very broad selection of brews.
To open the anniversary week, Nelson is hosting a Beer University to share his favorite beers Monday, March 10 at 7 p.m.
Nelson says he has seen Tulsans expand their taste for beer. Over the course of its existence, McNellie's has honored patrons that try each beer they offer at least once. The walls are lined with personalized beer mugs for each person who makes it into the club. For more information about the anniversary or to reserve a spot in Monday's Beer University, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
