A World War II veteran and Prison of War is back home in Green Country after a trip to Japan.
Phillip Coon returned to Tulsa after spending a couple weeks in Japan. He had been invited by the Japanese Emperor as an act of kindness.
"I thank the Lord for watching over me. I endured, protected my squad, and we all survived an attack and we came home," Coon said.
A U.S. Major General awarded the 94-year-old with the P.O.W. medal, a bronze star and the combat and infantryman badge.
During World War II Coon had been taken prisoner by the Japanese military. While he was in Japan he told his story to Japanese children and visited the copper mines where he worked as a P.O.W.
