Officer Involved Shooting Reported in Nowata County

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating after a trooper was involved in a deadly shooting.

At around 9:45 a.m., a caller stated that there was a man possibly armed with a knife in the town of Delaware, about 6 miles north of Nowata.

Capt. George Brown with the Highway Patrol says a trooper responded and make contact with the suspect.

"I can tell you that a short foot pursuit ensued resulting in shots being fired," Brown said.

Tracy Boone of Delaware can't believe a man she watched grow up is no longer here.

"I can't say enough about how loved he was by this community," Boone said. "He's got an extensive family and it's tragic that they lost him this way."

Capt. Brown would not confirm why the trooper shot at the man or if he had a knife at the time.

An earlier version of this report incorrectly stated the trooper was off-duty.
