ORU Completes Sweep Against Western Illinois

Oral Roberts overcame an early deficit on Sunday to earn a four game sweep of Western Illinois with a 16-6 win in eight innings at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

The Golden Eagles scored 37 runs in 30 innings against the Leathernecks, as they improved to 21-18 overall and 8-3 in the Summit League.

Eight Golden Eagles recorded an RBI on Sunday, and Kevin Cho led the way with three hits and four RBI. Logan Domenico walked four times in the game and now leads the team in on-base percentage with a .516 mark. Jared Schlehuber launched his 12thhome run of the season, and now leads the team with a .312 batting average.

Western Illinois (12-24-1, 3-9 Summit) showed some life offensively, knocking starter Drew Bowen out of the game in the fifth before going quietly in the later innings. Dustin Hunter (3-3) was tagged with the loss after throwing four innings with seven runs (five earned) and five walks. Catcher Manny Reyes was 1-3 and became the first Leatherneck in the series to record two RBI in a game. Western Illinois garnered just five hits on the day, while committing five errors.

The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the first off a bloop single by Jared Schlehuber, which led to a misplayed ball by the Western Illinois third baseman Tom lilja.

Drew Bowen struck out five of the first eight Leatherneck batters, but got into trouble in the third inning. A single, three hit batters, a wild pitch, and an error by Jose Trevino allowed Western Illinois to take a 4-2 lead heading into the fourth inning. Bowen lasted four innings, allowing four runs (one earned) with six strikeouts. {}

Dustin Hunter walked two Golden Eagles with the bases loaded in the fourth to tie the game for ORU, followed by a muffed throw by shortstop Austin Cowen on a sacrifice bunt by Cho that brought Bennett Pickar around to score, and ORU took the lead 5-4.

The Golden Eagles never looked back after that, scoring runs in every inning. Pickar extended the lead in the fifth to 7-4 with a two-run single before Western Illinois got them right back in the sixth off Reliever Dan Martony (4-0). Matt Rush came on to strike out the final two batters in the sixth and end the last rally for the Leathernecks.

An Error by Cowen in the bottom of the sixth allowed a grounder by Cam Schiller to plate Logan Domenico, and ORU pushed the advantage once again, 8-6.

ORU scored eight more runs in the seventh and eighth inning, and the game was called by run-rule after Schiller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth.

The Golden Eagles will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas to take on the No.14 ranked Razorbacks on Tuesday 6:30 p.m.
