OU, OSU Players Honored For Academics

Oklahoma offensive lineman Gabe Ikard was named the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year and a member of the Academic All-America Team for Division I football as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday.

Ikard is the first OU football player in program history to be named Academic All-America of the Year and is the first to be named a three-time Academic All-American, having also claimed first-team honors last season and second-team honors as a sophomore in 2011.

Ikard joins Lana Moran (softball, 1999-00), Stacey Dales (women's basketball, 2000-01) and Aaron Ivey (baseball, 2006-07) as Academic All-America of the Year honorees from the University of Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma City native was already named a 2013 National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete Award winner and will receive an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship. In addition, he is a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy as the top scholar-athlete in the nation. Ikard graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA in May with bachelor's degree in multidisciplinary studies with a biological sciences theme and is currently pursuing a second undergraduate degree from OU.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma State senior linebacker Caleb Lavey earned second-team honors. Lavey, a Celina, Texas native, already holds a degree in Finance and is pursuing an MBA at Oklahoma State. He has also been honored for his work in the classroom as an Academic All-Big 12 team member this season, as well as the past two.
