McIntosh County Area Under Boil Order After E. Coli Found in Sample

A mandatory boil order was issued for an area of McIntosh County this week after E. coli was found in a sample of water.

Customers of Rural Water District #6 in McIntosh County were notified Monday that a sample of water taken from a site tested positive for E. coli. RWD #6 is based out of Eufaula.

Officials with RWD #6 sent KTUL information about the boil order that states the drinking water is unsafe for drinking until further tests can be done. Customers should bring their water to a rolling boil for one minute or use bottled water.

It is unknown when the boil order will be lifted.

"Bacterial contamination can also happen due to a break in the distribution system," the notice added. A failure in the water treatment process also could be to blame.

Officials will resume chlorination of the water and continue monitoring samples until the issue is resolved.
