Salon Helps Neighbor Fight Cancer-- Through Tattoos!

A dual hair/tattoo shop is helping a woman fighting cancer with a "Tattoos for Tatas" fundraising event this weekend.Everybody has their own way of expressing who they are, and by getting a tattoo in honor of something that you believe in, you're not only showing your support through a financial donation, but you're marking it for your own course in life," said tattoo artist Lollie Moore. The Parlour in Sand Springs is hosting the event for a local woman battling stage four Ewing Sarcoma. Jolene Potter received her diagnosis in July. She is a single mother of two boys and is unable to work with her intensive chemotherapy treatments. Every three weeks, she receives chemotherapy. Many of those treatments require five-day hospital stays.Moore met Potter when a friend nominated her for a competition to win a makeover at the salon. At the event, those interested may purchase a personalized cancer ribbon tattoo or pink hair extensions. Moore said the shop has received many phone calls for people wanting to book appointments, although the fundraiser will be first come, first served.Moore tattooed Melynda Ames with a golden cancer ribbon in honor of Potter and Ewing Sarcoma, even though she has never met her."She's a single mom. I'm a single mom. Everybody needs a little bit of help, absolutely," Ames said.Potter became teary-eyed when she learned of Ames' tattoo."To touch somebody that I don't even know, I guess, and to make them to where they want to be a part of me, I guess, on their body, when they don't even know me is amazing," Potter said.Potter said her doctor has not given her a prognosis. However, she said her own research suggests she has about a 10 percent chance of survival. She said she is praying and will continue to fight. The event runs Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. There are other opportunities for pink hair extensions throughout the month.Potter has a blog, where you can learn more about her fight and make a donation. The Parlour is located at 107 N. Main in Sand Springs.
