Second Half Letdown Dooms Cowgirls
Oklahoma State's women's basketball team closed out the regular season on Monday with a 73-70 loss at Iowa State in front of 10,661 fans inside Hilton Coliseum.
With the setback, OSU fell to 20-9 overall and 9-9 in Big 12 play. The Cyclones improved to 21-7 and 12-6.
The Cowgirls led for much of the first half and used a 7-0 run midway through the period to built a 19-12 advantage. The Cyclones hit their first 3-pointer of the game with 3:20 left in the half to cut the margin to 29-27. OSU answered with seven-straight to extend to a nine-point advantage.
Freshman Brittney Martin scored 14 of her 20 points in the first 20 minutes to send OSU into the break with a 38-30 lead.
The Cowgirls scored the first five points of the second half to push the lead into double digits for the first time at 43-30.
ISU used an 8-0 run to cut the lead back to two at 46-44 with 11:30 to go and knotted the score at 63 apiece with four minutes remaining after hitting back-to-back treys. The Cyclones took the lead on another 3-pointer with 2:45 to go before Kendra Suttles answered with a trey 30 seconds later.
The Cyclones got a free throw with under a minute to regain the lead and extended back to a three-point margin with 40 seconds left with two more free throws.
Suttles finished with a game-high 26 points, while Martin added a game-high 11 rebounds as well.
The Cowgirls will be back in action this weekend at the Big 12 Championship in Dallas.
