Sheriff's Office: Heart Failure to Blame for Inmate's Death

An inmate at the Tulsa County Jail was discovered unresponsive in his cell Sunday afternoon.

Jail officials found Victor Smittick unresponsive around 4 p.m. during a security check.

Initial reports describe that medical professionals were called on scene to administer life-saving procedures. EMSA medics also were on scene to assist.

Smittick was pronounced dead after he was transferred to an area hospital. At this time he appears to have died of cardiac arrest.

Investigators with the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office were called on scene to rule out any suspicion of foul play. Smittick had previously been at St. John with heat related problems.

The Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office has taken custody of the body and will determine an official cause of death.
