Suspicious Letter Prompts Courthouse Evacuation
The third floor of the Cherokee County Courthouse was evacuated Tuesday afternoon after a suspicious letter was received containing a "white powdery substance."It happened around 3 p.m. Tuesday when the letter was received in the offices of the Cherokee County District Court on the third floor. The courthouse is located in Tahlequah.According to the release from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, the letter was opened by a courthouse employee and was intended for a District 15 judge. The letter also appeared to be threatening in nature.Upon receiving the letter, employees notified the Sheriff's Office and deputies proceeded to evacuate the third floor of the courthouse. All afternoon proceedings were postponed during the investigation.During the investigation, firefighters and emergency management tested the white substance and determined it to be talcum powder.Following their determination, deputies notified the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. OSBI and the Violent Crime and Drug Task Force are currently investigating the threat.
