Team Assembled to Investigate Oklahoma Execution

The Department of Public Safety is beginning its investigation of the execution of Clayton Lockett.

Governor Mary Fallin issued an executive order yesterday calling for the investigation after Tuesday's execution. The team is tasked with determining the cause of death for Clayton Lockett and whether the Department of Corrections followed current protocol for executions. The group also will make recommendations to improve the current execution protocol.

"I can assure everyone interested that this investigation is a top priority for us and will be conducted as quickly as possible," DPS Commissioner Michael C. Thompson said. "When the investigation is complete, its findings will be submitted to the office of the Governor."

Officials halted Lockett's execution 20 minutes into it because of a collapsed vein. A new timeline released Thursday revealed that doctor overseeing the execution did not think enough of the fatal drug combination made it into Lockett's bloodstream.
