Jury Finds Former Teacher Not Guilty of Abusing Verdigris Students

A jury trial has been taking place this week for a Rogers County woman accused of abusing her students.

April Cohenour was taken into custody November 2013 and charged with nine counts of assault and battery on a school student. Prosecutors allege that the former Verdigris teacher pushed, punched and grabbed several children during class time.

Court records indicate that both sides in her case have been at the Rogers County courthouse for her jury trial. Jurors announced Friday afternoon that Cohenour was not guilty on all nine counts.

Previous reports from KTUL state that Cohenour was an art teacher at the Lower Elementary School in Verdigris at the time of the allegations. Authorities were notified after some of the children went home with marks on their bodies.

Nine children stated they were abused by Cohenour. In some instances, students alleged that she pushed them in cabinets, walls and furniture in the classroom.
