OSU Wrestling Is Relative To Smith

STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Finals of the NWCA Team Duals was a family reunion for John Smith and some of his OSU wrestlers.

Then again, every meet is for Coach Smith.

Three of his current wrestlers are also his nephews. Mark and Zach White are the sons of Smith's sister Mary Ann.

"I'm the first of the White family to take on wrestling," explains Zach White.

"My father didn't wrestle but he obviously knows a lot about the sport from being around my mom and her family. I didn't come from a big background of wrestling like Chris (Perry), my cousin, and all the tradition with his family."

There is plenty of it when it comes to the third nephew Chris Perry.

Perry is the son of Smith's other sister Cathy. She married John Smith's former OSU All-American teammate Mark Perry.

Chris is well on his way to reaching that same level of success as father. He is currently 23-0 as a sophomore through Sunday, February 19.

And there was one more wrestler in the family tree taking part in Sunday's finals. Chris Perry's older brother Mark Jr. is an assistant coach for Illinois.

Cathy could be seen sporting a shirt that reads, "House Divided" with the Illinois and OSU logos. However Perry admits she was pulling for the Cowboys.

Oklahoma State beat Illinois in the semi-final match 18-16.
