Tornado Safety

Although a tornado could occur at any time of the year, April through June is the prime time for tornadoes in Oklahoma. As tornado season approaches, you want to make sure you are prepared in the event a tornado heads your way. Here are some tips to keep you safe this tornado season.

The first thing to do is create a tornado plan with your family. Everyone needs to know where to go in the event of a tornado. The best place is a basement, but if your house doesn't have a basement, find an area that is central in your house (such as a bathroom or closet) and as far away as possible from outside walls and windows. Make sure there are pillows and blankets in your "tornado shelter" to cover yourself and family to protect against flying debris.

You also want to create a tornado kit that is easy to access in the event of a tornado. In the kit you should have various items such as a battery powered radio, flashlight, extra batteries, and a first aid kit.

If you find yourself in your car during a tornado event, abandon your vehicle. You are safer outside your car. Once outside your vehicle, lay down in the lowest area possible. Unlike what you see in some movies and on TV, do not take cover underneath bridges or overpasses. Also, never try to outrun a tornado in your car.

Most importantly, always stay informed when there is a chance for severe weather. You can always count on us here at Channel 8 to bring you the most up to date information. Also, you might want to consider signing up for Weather Call.

Stay safe this tornado season!
