The union representing thousands of airline mechanics says it has presented plans to American Airlines that would help avoid layoffs while at the same time saving money for the company. It comes two weeks after the airline announced it would be laying off 13-thousand employees, including nine-thousand represented by Transport Workers Union. More than two-thousand of the proposed layoffs would come at Tulsa's maintenance base, which has more than six-thousand employees. The proposal presented by the TWU is similar in nature to one that was successfully implemented at United Airlines and includes a one-time incentive payment of 75-thousand dollars as well as a plan for health insurance coverage and other contractual benefits for all TWU-represented work groups. "We expect AMR management to give this proposal serious consideration," said TWU president James C. Little. "We are working tirelessly to make sure our members are treated fairly.That's why we've come up with a plan that will save the company money, creates a successful business strategy and provides real incentives and the dignity our members and their families deserve." The union representing flight attendants also made a separate proposal to the airline Wednesday.
