Three players scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as Tulsa dropped a 73-64 decision to UALR on Monday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. TU fell to 0-2 on the season, while UALR moved to 1-0 overall.
"In the second half, Taleya had a greater sense of urgency, but unfortunately we had too many situations where we didn't get rebounds and we didn't get loose balls, and that is what really killed us," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "We can shoot 33-percent and give up 54-percent if we are getting loose balls and getting rebounds, but we weren't doing that."
Taleya Mayberry had a team-leading 22 points, while Tiffani Couisnard had her sixth career double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, and Loren McDaniel scored 12 points. Couisnard also had a team-best four steals and two blocks.
TU shot just 33-percent from the field, eight-percent from behind the arc, but went 23-for-30 from the free throw line for 76-percent. The Hurricane had 36 points in the paint, 21 points off turnovers and 13 second-chance points.
The Trojans jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with 16:19 on the clock and climbed to an 11-point advantage with 7:24 left to play, but Tulsa fought back and pulled to within a basket, 34-31, at the break.
Mayberry came out and hit two quick shots to give TU a 35-34 advantage with 19:13 on the clock, but UALR took back the lead on a Taylor Gault jumper. Tulsa tied the game at 38-all at the 16:42 mark and again at 40 with 15:16 on the clock, but Gault hit a three-point basket to give the Trojans the lead, which they never relinquished.
UALR was led by Gault with 33 points and two blocks, while Hannah Fohne had 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds. The Trojans had 20 points in the paint and 18 points off turnovers.
Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, November 15th against Arkansas. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Tulsa Convention Center.
