Tulsa Could Be In First "Super Conference"

With all the talk of conference realignment, so far there is no "super conference" with 16 teams as many have been expecting. But, that could soon change and it won't be OU or OSU, but Tulsa that could be there first. As reported last week, the athletic directors for Conference USA and Mountain West are talking about possible plans for a merger of the two leagues.Wednesday afternoon, the conferences released a joint statement about those talks, saying that the partnership could mean a 24-team football conference that spans five time zones.Currently, the two conferences combined have 22 teams -- 12 full-time members and three part-time members in the CUSA and nine full-time members in the Mountain West. Only 20 of those teams compete in football. That means the conference could be looking to add four more schools.Tulsa has been a member of Conference USA since 2005 and won the C-USA championship in that same year.CUSA Commissioner Britton Banowsky told the Honolulu Star Advertiser earlier this week that any merger likely wouldn't take effect until the 2013 season.
