Tulsa Gains Votes In Football Polls

The University of Tulsa has won six straight games after Saturday's 59-17 rout of Marshall and that win streak is moving them closer to the Top 25 of the nation's college football teams. The Golden Hurricane would be 30th in the AP Poll if it were extended and 31st in the coaches poll. It's the closest to the Top 25 Bill Blankenship's team has been since ending the 2010 season ranked 24th.Tulsa (7-3) had the toughest September schedule of any team in the nation, playing road games Oklahoma and Boise State with a home contest against Oklahoma State sandwiched in between.Add to that that the Golden Hurricane had to play those games without Damaris Johnson, the all-time leader in total yardage and kickoff return yardage in NCAA history after the senior receiver was arrested just days before the season opener and later pleaded guilty to felony embezzlement.Without Johnson, Tulsa has re-invented itself as a strong running team, leading all Conference USA teams with 209.4 yards per game on the ground. Only Houston tops TU in total offense. After the 1-and-3 start, Tulsa has been tested only once in six straight victories, winning five of the games by at least 17 points, including Saturday's 42-point crushing of the Thundering Herd. The Golden Hurricane appear headed for a collision course with Houston to decide the CUSA Western Division. Tulsa will travel to play UTEP Saturday before hosting the Cougars in an 11 a.m. game on Friday, November 25th.If both TU and Houston win this week, the final game will decide who goes to the CUSA Championship game for a shot at the Liberty Bowl. It appears the Eastern Division will be won by Southern Miss, who needs just one win in its final two games to clinch.
