Tulsa Zoo Celebrates World Elephant Day
Today the Tulsa Zoo is celebrating World Elephant Day.
Elephant Day is intended to raise awareness for elephant conservation and the problem of elephant poaching. The Tulsa Zoo along with the Wildlife Conservation Society support the organization "96 Elephants," which works to raise awareness for poaching and the ivory trade which results in approximately 96 elephants being killed each day by poachers in Africa.
The Tulsa Zoo's Asian elephant herd took part in enrichment programs throughout the day. Enrichment means providing the animals mental and physical stimulation intended to encourage natural behaviors.
More information about elephant conservation will be available at the zoo's Lost Kingdom: Elephant interpretive center.
