Some University of Tulsa theater students completed a large mural Saturday in the historic Kendall-Whittier neighborhood.
Assistant Professor of Scene Design Kim Powers said the project is a service learning component of a scene painting class. Students were able to get experience painting on a large scale on a brick wall near I-244 and Lewis Ave.
"We're trying to get these young students involved in the community and also putting their skills to work in a practical setting. It's a little bit of a departure from painting scenery for the theater, which is, I think, good," said Powers.
Although the project gives students an opportunity to show off their skills, the project serves a greater purpose as part of TU's efforts to contribute to the Kendall-Whittier area.
The design features the word "TULSA" in block letters with local landmarks portrayed within the outlines of the letters.
It started with a royalty-free vintage postcard and they added some logos to highlight the partnership between TU and the Kendall-Whittier neighborhood.
