Police: Janitor groped by 2 teenage boys at Edison Prep after hours
TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) —
A school janitor was groped by two 13-year-old boys Monday at Edison Preparatory School, according to the Tulsa Police Department.
Police say the teenagers broke into the school Monday night, hours after school was out.
Sergeant Jill Phippen says she doesn’t know why, but she does know what the boys did when they came across a female janitor.
“Pestering her, trying to take her phone away and give her a hard time. During all of that, they sexually assaulted her. She knew to call her supervisor,” said Phippen.
Phippen says it was all captured on school cameras and reported to the woman’s supervisor.
When Channel 8 asked TPS about it Tuesday, they released a statement saying the woman was “harassed.”
On Wednesday, Channel 8 asked them again, wondering why they minimized the incident as harassment. They told us it’s a Tulsa Police Department investigation.
“Where she was cleaning, she was definitely alone,” said Phippen.
Ed McIntosh, president of the Tulsa chapter of the American Federation of Teachers, says budget cuts could be the reason the janitor was working alone Monday night, calling it a safety issue directly related to staffing and budget cuts.
“That means if you’re cutting staff on any level, that many fewer people are going to be around,” said McIntosh. “Bottom line, it’s the dollar."
The two boys have been officially charged with second-degree burglary and sexual battery.
