Attorney: Settlement being discussed in suit filed by family of Eric Harris
TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) —
A settlement could soon be reached in a civil lawsuit filed by the family of a man shot and killed by a former Tulsa County reserve deputy.
An attorney for the family of Eric Harris confirmed that a settlement is in the works after the civil lawsuit was filed against former reserve deputy Bob Bates, former Sheriff Stanley Glanz and other deputies. Bates shot and killed Harris in April 2015 while Harris was being subdued following a foot chase. Bates said he thought he had pulled his taser, not his pistol.
Bates later served 18 months of a 4-year sentence for manslaughter.
The Harris family argued that Bates shouldn't have even been there in the first place. They say Glanz was letting a friend play deputy, even though a 2009 investigation determined Bates wasn't qualified for the job.
