Bixby teacher honored as Gold Star Educator
BIXBY, Okla. (KTUL) – David Reneau is one of five teachers who won the 2017 Gold Star Educator award, an honor highlighting teachers who go above and beyond for their students.
He teaches seventh and eighth-grade Algebra as well as eighth-grade geometry at Bixby Middle School.
Although he loves math, he loves his students even more.
As a teacher for 19 years, he would do anything for them especially when they are going through a tough time.
“I had a young lady four and a half years ago that fell off a horse over Thanksgiving and broke her back,” he said. “She was very, very concerned about keeping up and very particular with her work. Through that method and with talking with her over the phone a couple times a week she was able to come back on Jan. 3rd when we came back from school and she had everything to turn in and was caught up and to this day we talk all the time.”
His will to help his students and inspire them is why he won the award.
“They watch the news,” Reneau said. “They see what’s going on in Oklahoma and throughout the nation and when things are down they get down. So being able to keep them up when times are low is very important to me.”
He believes what makes the difference between a good teacher and a great teacher is listening.
“They are so smart and they see what’s going on and they see how we interact with them and how we respond to that,” he said.
Reneau can’t believe he was chosen and wants to give credit to all teachers who work hard to give their students the best education possible.
