John Mellencamp receives Woody Guthrie Prize
TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) —
Hall of Fame musician John Mellencamp is being honored with the Woody Guthrie Prize in Tulsa.
The Woody Guthrie Center announced Mellencamp as the fifth recipient of the award Wednesday. The Center says Mellencamp has brought decades of hit songs to the American pop culture and has used his artistic gifts to spread a positive message of hope, equality and freedom, just like Woody.
“The Woody Guthrie Center is proud to recognize John Mellencamp for his incredible achievements as he continues the work of Woody Guthrie,” said the director of the Woody Guthrie Center, Deana McCloud, in a press release.
The prize will be given during an intimate program Aug 30 at 8 p.m. in the FlyLoft, directly above the Woody Guthrie Center. General admission tickets are $100 and Gold Circle seating tickets are $150. Seating is limited.
The opening of a special exhibition, “MELLENCAMP” will be opening the day after the award is given.
Tickets for the award ceremony go on sale July 20 and will be available at the Center or by calling 918-574-2710.
