An Okmulgee mother is in jail after her 5-year-old wandered into a QuikTrip alone Saturday night.

Tulsa police were called to the QuikTrip near West 23rd Street and Southwest Blvd on reports that a child was missing and inside the store without an adult.

According to the arrest report, store employees talked with the 5-year-old girl and she told them that she lived alone and that both her parents were dead and that's when they called the police.

When officers arrived, they made contact with 43-year-old Sharlotte Sandstede. They said she appeared to have bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and wasn't walking stable.

As officers were asking Sandstede if she had been drinking, they made contact with the child, who was crying and visibly scared. The child told police that her back hurt and she needed to go to the doctors.

EMSA was called and while in the care of paramedics the child told them "My mommy hits me" and police say there were signs of suspicious injuries on her body.

The Department of Health and Human Services was also called to assist with the child.

Sandstede has been booked into the Tulsa County Jail on complaints of child neglect and public intoxication.
