Oklahoma man kicks in door, saves woman and child from burning home

Sapulpa firefighters responded around 2 a.m. Wednesday to a house fire near Ridgeway and James. A neighbor who was up doing laundry called 911 after seeing flames coming from the house. (KTUL)

An Oklahoma woman and her child are safe this morning due to the heroic actions of a neighbor.

“I just heard a big boom, bang and that’s all I heard," said neighbor Cody Edwards.

Cody Edwards was up doing laundry when he saw flames out his window.

“Doing laundry at night saves on your electric bill," said Edwards.

And in this case, it may have saved lives.

Those flames engulfed his neighbors home and he knew he needed to help.

“I just came out the door and everything was orange, so I just ran over there, kicked in the side door and got them out of the house," said Edwards.

Saving a mother and her 11-year-old son, both asleep inside.

He even brought them inside his house to keep warm while firefighters went to work.

“I'm just glad everyone got out all right, they’re safe and sound," said Edwards.

Besides the house, the family also lost their car, nearly lost their lives, and unfortunately, they also lost their cat and dog inside the home.

Firefighters couldn’t find the family’s pets.

And by the time the flames were out the home was gone.

“Our first thought, of course, is putting the fire out and save as much as we can and then we turn our attention to the residents and see what we can do to help them," said Battalion Chief Kyle Zickefoose.

Which means finding the family a place to stay.

“It’s hard on everybody, especially when they leave out in their pajamas," said Zickefoose.

We’re told the family denied any help from the Red Cross.

Meanwhile, Edwards says he was just helping a neighbor in need.

“Yea that’s probably right, just at the right place at the right time," said Edwards.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The woman declined to speak on camera but says she and her son are doing okay.
