Oversized load hits overpass on US 412, closing roads above and below bridge
TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) -- The 65th West Avenue bridge over US 412 is closed until further notice while ODOT assesses damage from a Thursday afternoon crash.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is asking drivers to avoid the area near US 412 and 65th West Avenue while the bridge is assessed for structural damage.
According to ODOT spokeswoman Kenna Mitchell, an oversized load traveling along US 412 hit the overpass at 65th West Avenue. A trooper on the scene said a crane truck on top of a flatbed hit the bridge. Paramedics responded to the scene but no one was taken to the hospital.
All westbound and eastbound lanes of US 412 were closed for a time. Westbound lanes were quickly reopened but eastbound lanes remain closed at this time.
According to OHP, the driver did not have a permit to haul an oversized load and will likely be cited.
Drivers are being forced to detour at the 65th West Avenue exit. Anyone who uses that route can expect major delays and should plan on an alternate route.
Mitchell says it's not yet clear how long it will take to determine the extent of the damage from today's crash or how long the bridge and the road beneath it will remain closed.
Mitchell also says the same bridge was damaged in June during a crash and the contract for those repairs was just awarded this month.
