Police say a man is dead after an early morning shooting in east Tulsa.

Officers responded to the Somerset Park Apartments near 61st and Mingo around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday after a man was reportedly shot in the head. Police say neighbors heard some sort of argument and then a thud, and then a friend of the victim came over and found him with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital and later died.

Police say they questioned 22-year-old Devonte Spivey, who claimed to have no knowledge of how the man was shot. Officers say he was the one who originally called them to the scene. Investigators reviewed surveillance video from the apartment complex and later questioned Spivey again, and he lied about what he said happened, according to police.

Homicide detective Sgt. Dave Walker says drugs may have played a role in the murder.

“It’s unfortunate," he said. "Again, we’re here seeing people who shouldn’t be carrying guns because they are too ill-equipped emotionally to handle something like that, or not mature enough, and I think that’s what happens here.”

Detectives say they had enough evidence to arrest Spivey for first-degree murder.

Police are trying to notify the victim's family before they release his name.

This is Tulsa's 65th homicide of the year.
