Memorial's second half surge leads to 5A Boys State Title

Caleb Nero scored 26 points and Kobe Rose added 21 to help Tulsa Memorial defeat Claremore 73-46 for the Class 5A boys state championship Saturday at the Mabee Center.

Kaelen Childs scored 13 points and Isaiah Thomas grabbed 12 rebounds for the Chargers (25-3). Memorial lost last year’s final against Carl Albert on a putback with three seconds remaining.

Gunner Hall and Layton Hartloff each scored 12 points for Claremore (26-3), which shot just 29.1 percent. Jeffrey Oxford, who scored a game-winning layup in the semifinal win over Carl Albert on Friday, shot 3 for 17 on Saturday and scored eight points.

Claremore led 34-29 at halftime, but Memorial outscored the Zebras 18-6 in the third quarter and 26-6 in the fourth. The game was tied at 40 late in the third quarter, but Memorial scored the next 16 points to take control for good.
