OSU commit Bray anchors strong offensive line for Bixby Spartans

"He's 6'6" 300 lbs and he's incredibly strong," said Bixby High School head football coach Loren Montgomery Wednesday morning at the team's practice.

On paper, those are the physical attributes of a potential college offensive lineman. But there are other factors which set apart senior Bryce Bray.

"I don't like to brag but whenever I was younger, I used to work on my [footwork] all the time," Bray explained. "So I like to think I have pretty quick feet."

Bray is also starting on the varsity offensive line for the third straight season and has previously given a verbal commitment to play at Oklahoma State in 2018.

Watching Bray finish some of his blocks during Wednesday's practice demonstrated a certain ferocity coaches like to see.

When asked if this is a common occurrence, "Sometimes," Montgomery replied. "The more of a 'mean streak' [Bray] has, the better off we'll be."

"[The mean streak] came out a little bit my sophomore year," said Bray. "I was a little timid just because I was a younger guy. Last year it really came out because I knew the offense. I knew what I had to do. So yeah I'd have to say I have a pretty mean streak out there now."

And this is the perfect time for Bray to be playing at his best. Because for the first time in three years, there's a new quarterback under center.

"The runs are always open," said senior quarterback Staton King. "[Bray] gives me plenty of time back there; all those guys up front [contribute.] Those guys have definitely helped me a lot and make my job a lot easier."

When the two seniors were asked what their goals were in addition to winning a fourth consecutive state championship, "We'd love to go undefeated," King answered.

"Beat Jenks," Bray replied with a grin.

Obviously going undefeated is a particularly tall order, let alone just winning another state championship. But needless to say, the expectations are very high for Bixby yet again in 2017.
